This summer, we launched our first journalism school program. The students learned the very basics: how to navigate government websites to find sources, cold-calling, approaching strangers on the streets and asking questions sensibly. We talked about Twitter and Snapchat. Simultaneously, we tried to address some of the larger issues in Korea reporting: tackling North Korea, chaebols, trauma, etc. For that we were lucky enough to be assisted by veteran journalists from the field.
We’re coming back in January, with a new program & new guest lecturers. Ben Jackson will talk about reporting on the Korean companies ruining Indonesia’s rainforest. Matt Stiles will talk about data journalism. Kim Gamel will talk about covering the Middle East, and currently the Korean peninsula.
Some things will stay the same. Like, get ready to make a lot of phone calls to verify facts. Approach strangers. Spend hours on a feature article, assisted by the main lecturers at Korea Exposé. The program will be fun and intensive. Looking forward to your applications.
Curriculum details coming soon. For reference, check out the summer program.
